Elevating Devices Mechanic Certification Consultation Update

The BC Safety Authority initiated a consultation process on the proposed Elevating Devices Mechanic Certification Program in March 2011. Over a period of two months, we held 14 in-person sessions across BC and took feedback from approximately 400 of the 1,000 mechanics estimated to be in the industry.

Industry Stakeholder Panel

In September 2011, an Industry Stakeholder Panel was initiated to provide an external and independent opinion on viable solutions to the key issues brought forward by mechanics and industry stakeholder during the consultation:

  • The requirement of an exam in the grand-parenting path
  • The lack of a grand-parenting path for the majority of the non-union Class A mechanics
  • Availability of training/apprenticeship options
  • Application of the passport rules to the mechanics-in-training
  • Fees

Read an update on the Elevating Devices Mechanic Certification program as of May 2012. The Stakeholder Panel concluded discussions and put forward their recommendations to the BC Safety Authority in February 2012. Please read their recommendations on the above key issues.

Based on the resolution to the consultation issues, the program requirements were updated to include:

  • various apprenticeship paths
  • education requirements
  • revised requirements for grand-parenting
  • a challenge path for experienced mechanics

The feedback received and key issues can be found in the consultation report that covers the industry consultation conducted in March-April 2011.
