Applying for your contractor licence 

To get your licence prepare all the information in the Application for Boiler Technology Contractor Licence Form 811 and:

  1. Call our customer service line at 1-866-566-7233 or,
  2. Mail or fax the form to any BCSA office or,
  3. Visit any BCSA office in person and,
  4. Pay the Application Fee according to the Boiler Fee Schedule.

Renewing your licence

If you’ve received your renewal notice and would like to apply for an updated contractor licence, please call 1-866-566-7233 and have your credit card ready. Or, bring your completed renewal form and payment to any BCSA regional office.

Understanding contractor licences

All contractors working with boiler and pressure vessel technology must be licensed by BCSA. The conditions of your licence may allow you to perform maintenance, installations, testing, alterations or disposals. You need to have a licence for each type of boiler or pressure vessel technology that you intend to work with.

The established classes of contractor licence are, A, Au, Ap, B, REF, SRV, MA (PV), & MA(PF):

Scope of Work:
A

Authorized to install, alter, repair or maintain boilers, pressure vessels, and to construct, repair, install, maintain or alter pressure piping systems limited to the scope in the registered quality control manual. The scope of this licence also covers "Au", "Ap", & "B" class licence work. It does not cover refrigeration plants (except for pressure vessels and pressure piping systems attached to the refrigeration plant).

Note: A QC manual is required for submission for the licence

AUAuthorized to install, alter, repair or maintain pressure vessels, and to construct install, repair, maintain or alter pressure piping systems limited to the scope in the registered quality control manual. The scope of this licence also covers "Ap" class licence work. It does not cover refrigeration plans (except for pressure vessels and pressure piping attached to the refrigeration plant).

APAuthorized to construct, install, repair, maintain, or alter pressure piping systems, including refrigeration plant piping systems as limited by the scope in the registered quality control manual.

B

Authorized to install, maintain or repair a low pressure low temperature fluid heating plant with 150 m² or less of heating surface, a fluid heating plant with 75 m² or less of heating surface, a low pressure steam plant with 30 m² or less of heating surface, a high pressure steam plant with 10 m² or less of heating surface, and hot water heaters.

REF

Authorized to install, alter, maintain or repair a refrigeration plant or system of 5 kW or more rating as listed on the prime mover nameplate, or package unit nameplate.

SRVAuthorized to service, repair, set and test safety valves and safety relief valves as limited by the scope in the registered quality control manual.

MA:
Screen level MA(PV);

Authorized for shop fabrication of pressure vessels as per CSA-B51, and the shop fabrication of ASME pressure piping as per B 31.9, B 31.5, B 31.1. Limited to the scope in the registered quality control manual.

MA:
Screen level MA (PF);
certificate MA
Authorized for shop fabrication of pressure fittings as per CSA-B51, and the shop fabrication of ASME pressure piping as per B 31.9, B 31.5, B 31.3, B 31.1. Limited to the scope in the registration quality control manual.

Class A, Au, Ap, MA and SRV licences

Remember all Class A, Au, Ap, MA and SRV licence holders can only work within the current scope of their quality control program and documentation.

New power engineer certificates

If you’re a power engineer that operates equipment and would like to replace a lost certificate or if you are a power engineer from outside the province and wish to convert your current certification to obtain a BC certificate, please complete the Application for Power Engineer Granted / Duplicate Certificate Form 1005.
