Licences
If you intend to be hired by others to perform gas work, you must be licensed by BC Safety Authority.
To perform regulated work, gas fitters must be employed by a registered gas contractor or must be a gas contractor themselves. If you want to become a gas fitter, you need to get the appropriate certificate of qualification as detailed in Division 2 of the gas safety regulations .
Applying for your contractor licence
The Gas Contractor Licence Application Form 514 can be submitted to any BCSA office.
When you apply for a gas contractor’s licence you must also:
- Provide an original bond as detailed in the Gas Bond Sample and,
- Pay the Application Fee according to the Gas Fee Schedule.
Renewing your licence
If you’ve received your renewal notice and would like to apply for an updated licence, please check with your insurer that your bond is active, then call 1-866-566-7233 to pay your renewal fee by credit card. Or, bring your completed renewal form and payment to any BCSA office.
You must notify BCSA by calling 1-866-566-7233 as soon as your contact information changes.
Certificates
To be a gas fitter you must write and pass the applicable exam for your certification. There are different certification classes for different types of work. You must hold a certificate of qualification for each type of work you intend to do.
The most common certificates are:
- Class A: For installation and alteration of any gas system. There are no loads or limits for this classification.
- Class B: For installation and alteration of any gas system with limits. To understand those limits, please refer to Section 7 of the Gas Safety Regulation.
For all other classifications, please refer to Division 2 of the Gas Safety Regulation.
Please note: certificates are issued to individuals, not companies.
Renewing your certificate
Certificates must be renewed every three years. If you have received your renewal notice and would like to apply for an updated certificate, please call 1-866-566-7233 to pay your renewal fee by credit card. Or, bring your completed renewal form and payment to your nearest BCSA office.
