An opportunity currently exists to join BCSA as VP Legal and Policy, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary. Reporting directly to the President and CEO, this position plays a key role in enabling BCSA’s business strategy. As trusted advisor to the executive and the Board, you will assess risk and formulate plans of action that assist BCSA in operating effectively within a regulatory framework. Your mandate will include ensuring that decisions to act within existing legislation, or to propose legislative change, are made with a view to furthering the goals of BCSA.

Bringing passion and commitment to your teams, you will provide executive leadership to the Legal and Policy departments. You will assist the Board in meeting its oversight responsibilities and you will advise on succession for Board appointments.

This is a position for a strategic thinker who can both guide and motivate. The ideal candidate will have at least 10 years of legal experience including experience in-house and as Corporate Secretary. Experience in a regulatory field is an asset. If you have business acumen and the ability to influence, this is an opportunity to use those skills while playing a meaningful role in keeping British Columbia safe.

Karen Bazylewski has been active in the construction industry for over 35 years and is a project manager for Keith Plumbing & Heating Co. Ltd. She is a member of the Mechanical Contractors Association of BC and the British Columbia Construction Association. She is a former Board member of both the Construction Industry Training Organization (Chair, Program Standards Committee) and the Vancouver Regional Construction Association (VCRA) (Executive, Education, Awards of Excellence (Chair), Partnership, Manufacturers and Suppliers (Chair) and Trade Contractors Committees). She is also a past member and president of the Canadian Construction Women Association (CCW). Karen was the recipient of the VRCA/CCW Outstanding Women in Construction Award in 2002.

BC Safety Authority promotes Railway Safety Week

New Westminster, BC, April 29, 2015—BC Safety Authority (BCSA) today joins the BC Provincial Committee on Rail Safety Public Outreach to promote Railway Safety Week from April 27 to May 3, 2015.

“Safety is our top priority in the operation of British Columbia’s railway systems,” said Eric Samuelson, BCSA Railway Safety Manager.  “We endeavour to provide the public with a high level of confidence that our province’s rail operations are safe as we transport people, goods and materials.”

The BC Safety Authority (BCSA) Alumni Association Executive Committee has been busy in the month of March 2015. We have been working to engage interested alumni and strengthen the ties between those alumni and the BCSA. Here are a number of projects that the committee has been at work on:

Description 

The Safety Officer is accountable to the Regional Business Leader for maintaining and enhancing public safety by educating the public and industry and ensuring that codes, regulations and standards of safety are understood and observed.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Ensure that safety codes, regulations and standards are upheld with regard to a specific technology within an established geographical area by conducting inspections, evaluating/auditing client work, and raising public awareness.
  • Educate clients on how to meet safety requirements by providing on-site demonstrations or over-the-phone support.
  • Document inspections to ensure work meets Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
  • Maintain expertise on rapidly changing technology by staying up-to-date on relevant industry changes and upgrading own knowledge and skill on an ongoing basis.
  • Develop new Safety Officers by providing on-the-job training, regular mentoring and ongoing technical support.

Requirements

  • Requires completion of a trade school certification program, an apprenticeship in related technology. Preference for a two year diploma from a recognized Institute of Technology.
  • Four years of experience with a BC Class B gas fitter license and two years of experience with a BC Class A gas fitter license.
  • Knowledge of audit programs and risk assessment techniques.
  • Excellent problem solving and decision making skills.
  • Ability to work in a computerized environment and use common software.
  • A Valid BC Drivers’ License and a willingness to travel.
  • Skilled at managing tense and conflict situations. Relying on persuasion rather than enforcement to ensure safety requirements are observed.
  • Will be required to successfully complete a Gas Inspector’s Certificate of Qualification Examination prior to an offer of employment being made. Successful completion is defined as a 70% or better score.

15-22 Leader, HR - Performance & Learning

BC Safety Authority (BCSA) has a bold vision for the future: Safe Technical Systems. Everywhere.  This vision is accompanied by a multi-year strategy to expand and share safety and risk mitigation knowledge. BCSA employs a talented workforce of approximately 320 persons with a wide range of education, technical training, skills and experience. Candidates must have a university degree in a relevant discipline such as psychology, commerce or business administration and at least 7 years of experience in progressively more responsible HR roles, ideally in unionized contexts. With the demonstrated ability to collaborate and to influence across all levels of an organization and the proven capacity to plan and support transformational change,  candidates must have excellent analytical and interpersonal skills and substantive experience in coaching managers and in developing and implementing performance assessment and development tools.
