Importing European Biomass Boiler to British Columbia

Importing European Biomass Boiler to British Columbia?

Let us help you navigate your way through the process.

Traditionally, BC has required that foreign manufacturers become an American Society of Mechanical Engineer or ASME-accredited prior to importing boilers into the province. The ASME standards for construction are used across North America as the basis for boiler and pressure vessel design and manufacture. The ASME accredits manufacturing shops that have satisfactory quality control systems to ensure safe design and construction.

Staff from BCSA traveled to Austria to gain an understanding of the European Pressure Equipment Directive (PED), a non-ASME process for ensuring safe boiler design and manufacture. BCSA in collaboration with TUV Austria Services, has developed the BCSA Manual MAN4030-01 Approval of Biomass Boilers for British Columbia a process to approve biomass boilers conforming to the essential safety requirements of the EC Directives and European standards. European manufacturers may utilize a Notified Body or Accredited Inspection Body, acceptable to the BCSA, to verify that a boiler satisfies specified requirements of the EC Directives and European standards, and have these boilers registered for use in BC.

For more information about the process for the approval of biomass boilers conforming to European standards, please contact BCSA or TUV Austria, which has been accepted by BC Safety Authority to carry out verification of boilers in accordance with MAN-4030-01, the procedure for approval of biomass boilers.
